Hidden Gems

As a self-confessed foodie, most of our favourite ‘secret hidden gems’ locations are connected to food in some way. Whether it’s the little roadside restaurant tucked away on a mountainside in Kefalonia or the stall selling the freshest fish on the quayside in Marseille.

So, in the spirit of ‘sharing is caring’ here are some of our absolute favourite places to go!

Searching for a secluded spot on the south coast of France?

Forget Frejus (unless you have an insane budget), yes Nice is wonderful and the seafront is the place to go if you want to spend an afternoon people watching, but if you want to avoid the crowds and relax in a little bit of paradise then head to the Calanques in Cassis. These secluded coves are rugged and wild, not all of them easily accessible but perfect for a lazy afternoon, living life like the locals. Cassis has one of the most amazing ice-cream stores you will ever find and a great variety of restaurants serving the freshest fish and a glass of something chilled!

Gluten Free in Milan?

You might make the same mistake I did and assume that travelling gluten-free in Italy would be a tough call. All those pizzas and pastas, all those beautiful breads and pastries that you would have to forgo!

I’m so glad that I took a chance (and a massive pack up that I would never need) and headed to Milan. In between checking out the Piazza del Duomo or the incredible Cathedral, my favourite hidden gem was this little beaut – The Glu Free bakery in Milan. Fresh pizza, incredible bread, perfect little pastries and all a manner of tasty treats. We went back again and again. Amazing

Taverna Dafni , Zante

As the location for our honeymoon, Zante will always hold a special place in our memory bank. Sunny days and long nights spent in beach tavernas, whiling away the hours and wondering how people who had been married 15 years no longer had anything to talk about! Clearly they had had children and lost the will for conversation – only wanting a few minutes peace! This little taverna, The Tarverna Dafni, is still going – it’s so ‘secret’ it doesn’t have a website but a quick snoop on trip advisor will give you all the details you need -you really do need to check it out. If you fancy hopping on a plane to Zante then take a look at this company www.holidaygems.co.uk for flights and villas!

Unbelievable clifftop restaurant in Kefalonia

Some of our best holidays have been spent in Kefalonia, you can even nip over on the ferry from Zante. Decades after the crowds have moved on after the filming of Captain Corellis Mandolin, the Paradise Beach Taverna is still turning out amazing food in the most incredible location. Perched on a clifftop high above Aghia Ephimia, the same family runs it today that ran it nearly 20 years ago when we first visited. Treat yourself to fresh deliciousness and a warm Greek welcome. You won’t regret it.
